Wigging Out

WIGGING OUT?  FEAR NOT!

Are you Wigging Out trying to figure out the right wig to purchase?  Are you following the latest trend in wigs but not sure if this latest trend actually suits your face shape?  If you’ve answered “yes” to either of these questions, then it’s IDM to the rescue.  IDM catches up with Terry Kelley of Youngblood Haircutters to get the scoop on how to choose the right wig for your face.

According to Terry, face shape should always be considered when deciding which wig to wear. If you don’t know what your face shape is here is the test. Stand in front of a mirror so you can judge your facial features.  What shape do you see?

Round Shape – If the width of your face is around the same size as the length of your face, then you have a round shaped face.

Oval Shape – If the length of your face is around 1 and a half times the width of your face, then you have an oval shape.

Square Shape – If you have a strong brow and forehead along with an angular jaw, then your face shape is considered square.

Heart Shape –  If your forehead is wider than your jaw, then your face is considered heart shaped.

Triangle Shape – If  your chin and jaw line are wide but your forehead is more narrow, than you have a triangle shape face.

Once you have determined your face shape, it is easy to choose a complimentary shaped wig.

Round Shape – For people with a round face shape, the most important thing to remember is whatever wig style you pick, you want that style to add length and or height and avoid adding significant width. If your solo dress requires that you wear a full head wig, then stick with a wig such as a Morgan II or the Grainne wigs. If your solo dress is worn best with a bun wig, then the Tessa or Lexy will work perfectly. For younger girls, the Sinead style looks best.

Oval Shape – There are pros and cons to having an oval shaped face. On the plus side, your face will look great with almost any hair style because adding length or width complements your features. On the down side, this means that your face shape gives you very little information about what style to choose. Because your face shape is so symmetrical, show it off with the Sinead full head wig that gives length but is pulled slightly back from the face. The Morgan II will also look great because it follows the same shape of your face. For younger girls, the Megan and Jordan II wigs look best. If you’re into bun covers, both the Lexy , Tessa and Rachel styles will work.

Square Shape – If your face shape is square, you should focus on softening your strong jaw line. The Grainne full head wig is bold in size, but graceful in its fall towards your face. The Morgan II full head wig offers a more natural look with the same softening effect on your facial features. For the younger dancers, the Megan and Jordan II full head wig styles look best. If you prefer to wear a bun cover consider the Rachel style. This can be worn long, or pinned up in a one of a kind look. Stick to softer curl bun covers that add curves to your otherwise strong facial features.

Heart Shape – With a heart shaped face, it’s best to add length to create width surrounding a narrow jaw line. The Grainne is a bold tight curl style wig that follows the heart shaped face beautifully. The Morgan II is a looser curl, offering a more sophisticated look for the heart shaped faced girl. For younger dancers, the Megan and Jordan II full head wig styles look best. If you enjoy wearing a bun cover style, the Rachel   or the Lexy wig will complement your facial features best as they are a softer fuller curl.  Both of these bun wigs look even better slightly further back on the head so as not to make your face shape appear diamond like with the opposing points of your chin and the bun wig.

Triangle Shape – If you have a triangular shaped face, you want to narrow your chin and widen your forehead, this is a very rare face shape. The Morgan II helps widen your forehead, but still offers great length.  The Grainne full head wig also gives great forehead width and offers a tighter curl look. For younger dancers, the Sinead or Megan full head wigs work the best. Like people with a heart shaped face, you look best in the Rachel and Lexy bun wig set further back on your head.

Reminder:  While dress style and coloring may determine what color and style of wig will look best, ultimately your face shape is a major deciding factor. While a wig and a dress may look perfectly together, a wig, a dress, and your face shape might not work as well together as you hoped. When choosing a wig, don’t limit yourself according to your dress, but instead focus on combining what your dress needs and what your face shape needs.
